. >>> i'm phil lebeau. welcome back to the halftime report. more breaking news regarding that boeing 787 dreamliner that caught on fire while parked at logan airport in boston. this is video of the japan airlines plane. the plane landed. all of the passengers left the plane. a mechanic was doing a walk-through when he noticed a light smoke condition increasing from the underbelly of the plane. they then called the fire department. the fire department came. they investigated. the fire was in a compartment with batteries and other electrical components. they are still investigating exactly what has happened. we have a call into boeing. boeing has not responded to our request for more information. i think boeing is still trying to figure out, base odd what they're hearing out of boston from the fire investigators exactly what's going on with the 787 dreamliner. a couple of things to keep in mind, scott. the mass port officials at boston just held a press conference where they said prior to this they've had a few mechanical issues, nothing major, regarding the 787 dreamliners that landed at

disaster of the day. boeing 787, let's get to phil with the latest. >> talking about 787 dreamliner, japan airliner at the boston airport. boeing shares have been hammered, down 3% of the day, down 5% over the last few days. this stock has not fallen too much since october 2011. the market cap here greater than $3.1 billion. shows you how much investor headline risk is out there when it comes to boeing shares. here is part of the reason why. look at pictures in the last hour from boston. dreamliner suffered a fuel leak at boston airport. about 4,000 gallons of fuel leaking on the tarmac there. it happened on a flight scheduled to leave around noon to tokyo. remember december 5th, faa ordered all airlines to check their 787 fuel lines because japan airlines out of japan, they both reported problems. unclear if this leak due to the problem. one example of another problem in the last month when it comes to the dreamliner. we put this time line up here because this really shows you the headline risk built into boeing right now. one reason that the investors are so worried, going back st

, another embarrassing incident for boeing and its 787 dream liner. today was brake problems that canceled a flight. yesterday, there was a fuel leak, spilled 40 gallons of fuel on the runway. monday in boston, there was a battery fire. both of those were japanese airline flights. boeing keeps saying these are minor issues. easily fixed, and the planes are safe to fly. but you know what? a lot of people are now saying that many of these problems are coming from outsourcing. that's right. outsourcing. and the fact in america we don't seem to have enough qualified engineers to do the job. meanwhi meanwhile, the flu season is going to be one of the worst in at least a decade. now the mayor of boston is declaring a public health emergency. good evening, alicia. >> good evening, larry. the mayor called this a flu epidemic today, already four people have died tied to the flu. so far, there have been an estimated 700 flu occasions in the city of boston alone, that's compared to 70 cases, all of last season, we are only half way through the flu season this year. so the city is providing f

boeing 787 dream liner after a series of incidents which put a question mark over the safety of boeing's flagship plane. the shares this week have taken a hit. down another 2% in today's trading session because two more problems with 787s on domestic japanese flights today. there was an oil leak and the other a cracked windshield. phil lebeau is tracking information from washington. >> the ntsb said, this is af plane, feel confident if you are playing it. at the same time, the faa launched a special review looking at reliability and safety of the 787 dreamliner. it'll be run by the faa. but boeing will be assisting in that review and so will some of the suppliers, no doubt, as they look at electronics and use of lithium ion batteries on the dreamliner. remember a lithium ion battery was traced to be the source of the fire of the 787 that caught on fire while parked at a gate in boston on monday. in 2007 the faa made special rules for the use of lithium ion batteries on airplanes because of flammability can concerns. with all of that said, listen to what the head of the faa and s

boeing. phil, over to you. >> we've heard from the ntsb, expecting an update from them. they have at least an initial report regarding the fire investigation of that 77 dreamliner in boston yesterday. the ntsb saying that they have decided they are going to send two more investigators to look at the dreamliner in question and that at least initially taking a look at the fire in question they found severe fire damage to the battery of the auxiliary power unit. remember, the auxiliary power unit is what is used to provide power to an airplane when it is parked on the tarmac, not while it's in flight so the battery unit, severe fire kagge there, and it's pretty clear, scott and maria, that we are going to see more airlines, if they haven't already, they are going to start checking their wiring on the battery unit. i just spoke with the folks out of ana in japan. they have a number of dreamliners, checked theirs overnight at the urging of the ministry of transportation in j.i just talked with united airlines. it has checked the battery power wiring on all of its dreamliners, all six of t

oracle when you need it? can you believe boeing's done nothing? next to nothing. plus 2.7% is next to nothing. despite its new product cycle, the dreamliner series, a tripling of that gain could be reasonable this year. i expect a terrific quarter, the first of many, though my trust likes united tech as a better play in the new worldwide aerospace cycles. i see boeing going to the mid 80s. chevron getting the edge for certain courtesy of its stronger production growth. my charitable keeps buying that one. can alcoa repeat that miserable performance? alcoa will be helped only by the hideous expectations it has set for itself. a very low bar made of aluminum keeps it from advancing to the low teens. you want the best dog in the kennel? caterpillar. cat is the best dog. everyone seems to recognize it is undervalued after yesterday's sterling performance. this plus it is one of the great china plays, but it lost 1.1% last year after having to revise its bullish forecast downward. my charitable trust is betting it could go up at least 10%. the last time cat guided down big was a couple

news we're seeing reflected in shares of boeing which has ticked lower since these reports came out. there was a fire this morning on a 787 dreamliner parked at logan airport in boston. it is our understanding according to information we're getting out of boston that the fire has been put out. there were no passengers, no crew on the plane. what's unclear is what started this fire, whether it was something electrical, the plane, if there was something else. we've got a call into boeing to get more details. all we heard from boeing is they're going to be looking into these reports. so they're getting this information as quickly as we're getting this information. but the important thing to keep in mind here, carl, is that this is the fourth incident regarding a dreamliner. remember, we had the two reports from united of dream liners losing some power, some degree of power while in flight and then also a similar report regarding the first flight going over the qatar airways over doha. so now we have a report out of boston of a fire at logan airport on a 787 dreamliner, parked at a gate

got breaking news ton the 787 boeing dream liner. phil, if you're out there, tell me what you've got, my friend. >> larry, we have learned that the faa is going to be conducting a special review of the power system in the 787 dream liner. essentially this is the faa saying let's take a pause here and take a look at the design, the manufacturing, how the power system works on the dream liner. let me be clear here, this is a special review. this is not an airworthiness directive. it would be a much more serious matter. and it might involve airlines being told stand down, don't fly this plane. that is not what is happening. airlines that have the dream liner will continue to flow it. but the faa is saying this is not simply looking into what happened on monday in boston, we want to do a special review of the power system remember, at the heart of this is the issue of the way the dream liner derives so much of the onboard electricity. this uses much more electricity than any other plane. as a result, it's much more complex than your typical airplane. again, the faa is going to be conduct
